Air Quality Action Fund

Supports local authorities deliver a range of transport related actions aimed at improving air quality.

Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs)

Local authorities can declare AQMAs and develop air quality action plans to address identified problems.

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)

Cameras linked to a national vehicle licencing database to allow vehicle compliance with schemes to be monitored.

CAFS Governance Group (Scottish Government)

Supports implementation of the Cleaner Air for Scotland (CAFS) strategy.

Engine Retrofitting Centre, Scotland

Plans are being progressed to establish a centre to retrofit vehicles with compliant engines – involves collaboration with the commercial and bus sectors, the Energy Saving Trust and the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership.

Euro emission engine classification standards

Provide emission ratings for vehicles including limits for nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM).

The term used to describe condensed phase (solid or liquid) particles suspended in the atmosphere.

Supports the development of a nationally consistent approach to the implementation of low emission zones in Scotland.

Supports engagement and consultation with residents, businesses and other stakeholders in order to deliver low emission zones.

Low Emission Zones Delivery Group

Responsible for addressing the technical/legal issues required to set up the low emission zones.

Low Emission Zones Leadership Group

Convened to support the delivery of low emission zones in Scotland.

Low emission zones (LEZs)

Set an environmental limit on defined road spaces, allowing access to only the cleanest vehicles.

Nitrogen oxides (NOx) gases

Are released into the atmosphere when fuels are burned, such as petrol or diesel in a car engine.
